DST Statement Regarding the Cancelation of Avenue Q

In an effort to be more transparent about the current climate surrounding Desert Stages and the events surrounding our production of Roosters, please see below for an update on our production of Avenue Q.

At 10 am on Saturday, February 10, the director of Avenue Q along with DST’s Executive Director and Board met with the Avenue Q cast and creative team virtually. The director believes that due to the subject matter of this particular show, proceeding with this production as originally planned would be dismissive of the issues surrounding diversity and inclusion in our theatre community. They did not want to ask the cast to put their heads down and act like nothing was wrong when it was clear that DST had not shown itself to be an appropriate producer of pieces regarding such topics.

Therefore, to learn from our mistakes and to strive to make DST the safe place we intend it to be for our casts, creative teams, and audiences we have, at this time, decided to cancel Avenue Q. After much consideration and input from the community and cast, we do not believe it is the right show for this time in DST’s history. We hope to be a place where this show can be produced again in the future, but we know we have learning and rebuilding to do before that can happen.

Our hearts go out to the cast and creative team that have been working tirelessly to bring this show to fruition. This was not an easy decision to make, but one that we felt was right.

We are considering putting a show in its place to utilize this cast and their many talents.  We do not have further information regarding this at this time.
